Message from India Arie's song, "I am not my hair" please help!?

I think in this song she is basically saying that your hair does not define you, and it is what's on the inside that counts. And she uses hair, because it is often an issue that arises with African American women. A lot of people may think straight hair looks better and might make black women who like to wear it natural feel like their hair is not 'good hair' or as she says in the song, they look like a sl ave. Or women may get put down for having no hair, and India Arie is just saying feel free to express yourself because you don't have to conform to these expectations of what to look like that people and society have set for you. That you are an individual, and it is not your hair that matters but your soul.
